# Missed Call Statistics for Indian Service Businesses (2026)

Sourced data on missed calls, caller behavior, and AI-receptionist adoption — with citations. Last updated: 2026-09-03. We fact-check every number before it goes on this page; see "Stats we won't repeat" below for the ones that don't hold up.

## Headline numbers

- **79% of Indian businesses say customers actively avoid answering calls from unrecognized numbers** — even though 76% of Indian consumers say they prefer voice calls over digital channels for anything that needs clarity or urgency. (Truecaller × Tata Tele Business Services × Kantar, *The State of Business Calling 2026*, surveying 1,000 consumers and 500+ businesses across 17 Indian cities, published July 2026)
- **78% of consumers have abandoned a business entirely after one unanswered call**, and 82% say they'd call a competitor instead. (CallRail, 1,000 US consumers, September 2025)
- **37.8% of calls to small businesses were answered by a live person** in the only broad-sample study of live answer rates — the rest went to voicemail (37.8%) or got no response at all (24.3%). (411 Locals, 85 businesses across 58 industries, 30-day monitoring window, 2016 — see caveat below)

## What happens after a call goes unanswered

From CallRail's 2025 consumer survey (US, n=1,000):

| Caller does next | Share |
|---|---|
| Leaves a voicemail | 42% |
| Switches to online chat | 24% |
| Calls a competitor immediately | 21% |

Hold-time tolerance is short: 41% hang up after 1–2 minutes on hold, and only 18% will wait past five minutes.

## Why voice still matters in India

The Truecaller/TTBS/Kantar 2026 report is the most credible India-specific data available:

- 76% of Indian consumers prefer voice calls over digital alternatives for high-stakes or time-sensitive interactions.
- Voice is favored for clarity (56%), reassurance, and urgency — the moments where a missed call costs the most.
- The paradox: the same consumers who prefer calling also screen unrecognized numbers, because 79% of businesses report customers dodging unknown-number calls. A missed call and a screened call produce the same outcome for a business — a conversation that never happened.

That gap — high demand for voice, low tolerance for unanswered or unrecognized calls — is the specific problem an always-answered, caller-ID-normalized AI voice agent addresses.

## Are people ready for an AI voice agent to answer?

From the same CallRail 2025 survey:

- 52% of consumers believe a business offering an AI assistant after hours signals *better* service, not worse.
- 91% of Gen Z respondents said they'd use AI to book an appointment.
- 66% would use AI to get hours or location information.
- 50% would use AI to book an appointment, across all age groups.

## Stats we won't repeat

Most "cost of a missed call" content recycles five numbers: 62% of calls go unanswered, 85% of callers never call back, $75 billion lost annually to missed calls, 80% of callers skip voicemail, and a $1,200 average cost per missed call. An independent fact-check ([Majleads, *We Fact-Checked the 5 Statistics Every AI-Receptionist Vendor Quotes*](https://www.majleads.com/blog/ai-receptionist-statistics-fact-check)) traced each one:

- **62% unanswered** — traces to a real study (411 Locals, above), though it's a small, self-published, decade-old sample.
- **85% never call back** — untraceable. No underlying study exists; it circulates purely through blogs citing other blogs.
- **$75 billion lost annually** — misattributed. The source study (NewVoiceMedia, 2018) measured general customer-service failures, not missed calls specifically.
- **80% skip voicemail** — untraceable. The citation trail dead-ends in a 2009 lifestyle article with no data behind it.
- **$1,200 per missed call** — untraceable. No such figure appears in the report it's usually attributed to; it looks like unsupported vendor arithmetic.

We're leaving those out. If a number's on this page, we can point to where it came from.

## Notes

- US-sourced stats (CallRail, 411 Locals) are included because no larger-sample Indian equivalent exists yet; caller behavior after an unanswered call is not obviously India-specific, but treat the exact percentages as directional, not local.
- This page is maintained. As better India-specific data appears (vertical-level answer rates, after-hours call share, response-time-to-conversion), it gets added here with the same sourcing standard.
